Week 20

  • Proverbs 1-2

  • Proverbs 3-4

  • Proverbs 16-18

  • Proverbs 31

  • 1 King 11-12

Proverbs 31 is known for its description of biblical womanhood, which is why you may have heard someone reference “the Proverbs 31 woman.” But this final proverb is about much more than being a woman. Proverbs 31 closes the book with a picture of godly wisdom on display in family life. The virtuous wife and mother described here gives all parents an example to follow as they strive to be husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers who parent, love, and work in godliness. The main principles affirmed in this proverb are a person’s trustworthiness, responsibility, and godliness. Whether you are a parent or not, those are characteristics that can only be lived out if you are seeking God’s wisdom for daily living. Verse 30 draws attention to the fear of the Lord as an admirable quality, which brings the Book of Proverbs full circle from where it began in 1:7. Worship of and respectful submission to the Lord’s authority is the key to wisdom in every area of life.

Circle all of the words or phrases in Proverbs 31 that describe godly living. What do these teach you about how God expects you to serve Him and relate to others? Where is there immediate need for improvement in your own life? Ask God to transform those areas of your life in order to make you a better witness for Him—beginning with the transformation of your heart and mind to be made like His.
