  • 1 King 8, 9:1-9

The Book of 1 Kings picks up where 2 Samuel left off with the transition from David’s kingship to that of his son Solomon. Solomon’s rise to power wasn’t without controversy—Adonijah, his older brother, saw himself as the rightful heir to the throne, and Solomon killed him in order to maintain peace and establish his authority as king. After David made Solomon king and David was about to die, he gave Solomon some parting wisdom. David told Solomon to make obedience to God his primary ambition so that God would continue to be faithful to His covenant promises. Solomon’s predecessors—Saul and David—had learned the hard way the importance of obedience to their covenant with God. Both men had made mistakes that Solomon could learn from, but as his story unfolds, it becomes evident that Solomon too was a broken human leader unable to faithfully uphold his covenant with God. Thankfully, as God’s children today, we are recipients of God’s covenant of grace, which means our relationship with God is based on Jesus’ perfect obedience rather than our own efforts.

As 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, we are made righteous through the perfect life and sacrificial death of Jesus. Where in your life right now are you most tempted to try and prove yourself as being worthy? How does knowing Jesus has done that for you free you from such a need?
