Do what with a Heifer? - Genesis 15

Genesis 15 stands as one of the most powerful covenant passages in all of Scripture. In this episode of A Good Cup of Coffee, Noah Wagner and Seth Pippin walk listeners through God’s promise to Abram and reveal how deeply the gospel is embedded in this ancient text.

God initiates the encounter with a simple but profound command: “Fear not.” Before Abram speaks, God addresses the fears and longings of his heart. Abram’s concern is clear—he has no heir. God responds not only with a promise, but with reassurance, taking Abram outside to gaze at the stars as a reminder of God’s limitless power.

When Abram believes God, Scripture says that faith is credited as righteousness. This moment anchors the biblical truth that salvation has always been rooted in trust, not achievement. The covenant ceremony that follows drives the point even deeper. In a ritual where both parties would normally walk between the pieces, God alone passes through—declaring that the fulfillment of the promise rests entirely on Him.

This covenant anticipates the New Covenant in Christ. Where humanity fails, God remains faithful. Genesis 15 invites believers to trust God’s character, rest in His promises, and anchor their faith not in performance, but in grace.
